Sudden Spoon

Collaborative Close Readings

About Us (and some of our friends too)

Sudden Spoon is a blog by a group of writers. We are all graduates of the amazing course, Modern and Contemporary Poetry (ModPo for short), taught on Coursera by UPenn professor Al Filreis.

Our goal is to continue to do collaborative close readings, delving closely into one poem a week. All the poems will be available somewhere on the Internet, and we will have a link and a brief introduction.

We would love to have you join us in our discussion in the comment area — feel free to chime in, whether you are a ModPo grad or just stumbled across us on the web.

Raymond Maxwell has set up an extensive blogroll of ModPo alumni at

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be really something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and very broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it! Posted by
